"First Impression is the Best Impression"

RESUME WRITING

The First impression is the best and lasting impression. Also the first 2 minutes of either the selector reading your resume or at the time of your interview will decide whether you will get the job or not.

Potential employers see the quality of your bio-data first and then call you for the interview. Therefore your bio-data should be presented in a neat, attractive and easy-to-read format to reflect some of your characteristics. Many good candidates lose the chance of even being called for an interview simply because their bio-data served as an unattractive presentation of its owner’s work. Your bio-data must act as a forerunner in getting the job you seek.

There are some guidelines, we suggest, you follow when making your bio-data in order to enhance your employment prospects.

1. Name (As found in your passport).

2. Title of the Job you are applying for. (Do not mention “for the suitable job”. No one has the time to view your resume and find out your suitability).

3. Educational Qualification (First titles of highest qualification).

4. Objective (in 3 to 4 lines only). If you are sure that you are the right candidate, mention that you are/were working in similar positions.

5. Career summary (An overall summary of job titles as well as number of years must be given in a brief manner).

6. Present job (Present job must be on top and previous experience must be in reverse order.)

7. Nature of work must be given in brief for each job.

8. No. of year’s experience: Field(s) of experience and total number of years experience.

9. History and details of projects involved.

10. Computer Qualifications : (Professional / technical qualification can also be given in addition to educational Qualifications).

11. Computer Experience : (This can follow the Computer Qualifications).

12. Any seminar / conference / workshop attended, training undergone, skills acquired, written contributions made to the professional publications.

PERSONAL INFORMATION

13. Age & Date of Birth.

14. Nationality

15. Present & Permanent Addresses

16. Contact Telephone numbers (Residence, office address & also Fax No. if available)

17. E-mail address (E-mail address is a must)

18. Professional membership : It is preferable – even a must – to add membership in any professional association.

19. Using technical terms will give the employer a better picture about your job knowledge and capabilities.

20. Countries you have visited and worked in.

21. Languages known with fluency (Indian and Foreign – Speak, Read & Write)

22. Hobbies / Interests / Pastimes (These are considered telltale sign as to your personality and inclinations).

23. Mention whether you are a Non-Smoker / Non-Alcoholic. (Big organizations prefers non-smoking and non-alcoholic employees ONLY).

24. It is optional to add or to have ready a couple of references, in case a potential employer wants to make inquiries about you.

POINTS TO REMEMBER

Remember that all bio-data that have a professional page-format with border; attractive fonts and typeset (with italics, underline, bold etc.) have the potential to impress. How many well-qualified and experienced candidates have lost good opportunities simply because of the poor quality of their bio-data sent for a prospective job? In many countries, there are companies whose main business is to prepare professional bio-data for its job seekers.

Improve the look of your bio-data by printing it on a laser printer, and always attach a smart color photograph, preferably wearing a suit and tie (if you are a guy!!).

It is recommended that you present a clear and typed letter for the job you are applying. This should be brief and be of just one page with basic but important details pertaining to the job advertised and being sought. In this letter you should mention your aptitude and suitability to take the job: perhaps, you should mention qualities and abilities that you think the potential employer might be interested in knowing.

HOMEWORK

Doing some homework is very important. You have to learn more about the Company (through websites, brochures and other contacts) and prepare your pep talk about how you will serve the company, in case of your selection.

NECESSARY ATTACHMENTS

1. Bio-data with one passport size photograph attached, preferably with your name written on the back.
2. Educational qualifications (copies-not originals)
3. Other Qualification (copies)
4. Main letters of recognition / experience (copies).
5. Copy of passport (always last attachment).
